Postcard Project

Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art

July 2024

This is a series of 10 paintings of ordinary things created in a span of 10 hours over two days. With a timer set to one hour per piece, each 5x7 inch oil painting was an exercise of speed in all parts of a painting process including observation, the translation into paint, and in addressing inaccuracies. The time pressure engaged my unconscious mind to take centre stage, attempting to answer the many questions that arise in the act of painting.

  • How do I draw the accurate proportions and perspective of oblique circles, cylinders, rectangles, triangles…?

  • How do I convey materiality and the differences between metal, tissue, glass, plastic, ceramic…?

  • How does transparency differ between a glass jar versus. a plastic tape dispenser…?

  • How does an edge look razor sharp on a sardine tin lid versus smooth to the lips on the top of a bowl…?

  • How does an edge look soft and ruffled on a roll of tissue paper versus hastily torn on a roll of tape…?

The paintings were trimmed to 4x6 inches, mounted a postcard, and shown at the Alternator Gallery in Kelowna, BC during the 2024 Annual Postcard Project and Members’ Exhibition.
